Let's pick up where I left off in my previous blog post. Let's discuss conflicts as an opportunity to foster transformative change through design.
In his book "Design for a Better World" (2023), Don Norman emphasises a fundamental concept: understanding the underlying mechanisms of behaviour by studying what happens when something goes wrong. This notion resonates deeply with my research project, where conflict emerges as a complex construct born from actions and intertwined with diverging principles, ideas, values, and norms. Hence, the foundation of culture. However, rather than viewing conflict solely as a challenge, I see it as a significant opportunity.
Conflict is not merely a roadblock but a pathway to understanding. It unveils layers of perception and comprehension of the world, offering insights into human behaviour and societal dynamics. By delving into the roots of conflict within communities, we gain valuable knowledge about underlying tensions and motivations. This understanding serves as a foundation for designing interventions that address these issues effectively and lays the groundwork for my research approach, which is based on an integrative perspective.
Design interventions provide a unique opportunity to transform conflict into positive change. By leveraging insights gained from studying conflicts, we, as a collective participating in my research project, can develop strategies that promote dialogue, collaboration, and ultimately, resolution. These interventions go beyond addressing surface-level issues; they target the root causes, aiming to create a lasting impact and foster community resilience.
Moreover, embracing conflict as an opportunity allows us to challenge existing norms and reimagine possibilities. It encourages creative thinking, exploring innovative approaches to problem-solving. By reframing conflict as a catalyst for growth and transformation, we shift our perspective from avoidance to engagement, from fear to empowerment.
In conclusion, conflict is not something to be feared but embraced as an opportunity for growth and innovation. By understanding its underlying mechanisms and harnessing its potential, we can create meaningful design interventions that pave the way for a better world.
I am looking forward to going on this journey together with people who care and proactively engage in this unique co-experience, transforming challenges into opportunities, and shaping a future guided by empathy, collaboration, and positive change.
